What is Boudoir?

The word itself derives from the French and means “A Woman’s Private Salon, more specifically the dressing-table that most women sit at to do their makeup and where they keep their jewellery.

Unlike other genres, the Boudoir ladies does not always focus on professional models – in fact, anybody can be in a Boudoir Shoot.

Boudoir photos can range from intimate and flirtatious to straight-up sexy, depending on the woman’s comfort level and preference.  Women may be clothed and yet they won’t be revealing any intimate parts either.

When women take Boudoir portraits, they are portraying their person in a sensual and intimate manner. Creating strong Boudoir photos requires a thoughtful approach to the lady’sbody, clothing, and personality.

Boudoir is a celebration and not an objectification of female beauty. A Boudoir Shoot is a journey of self-discovery and it is hugely empowering. Women leave the shoot with a sense of self-accomplishment with their confidence levels hitting a real high. The end result vs the initial investment made towards participating in a Boudoir Shoot will be well worth it.

Different Types Of Boudoir Shoots

Dark and Moody As regards shooting styles, this one is my utmost favourite.. I love this look because of the mystery that surrounds it. Rather than “revealing it all”, you’re leaving much up to one’s imagination, which can in turn lead to some very powerful images.

Light and Airy – this is the most used style. If you take a look on Pinterest, you will spot it straight away. The scenes are extremely bright, with white being the prominent colour.

Pinup – this is a more stylized look and is perfect for anybody who loves a more vintage look.

Erotic – 50 Shades have made this genre more popular over the last few years. This is a more explicit and openly sexual style. It can be a little kinky or a bit more playful. It can be very provocative and explicit, or anywhere in between. It can be light and airy, or dark and moody. If you would like to take some photos that are a little spicier, just let me know beforehand. Be open and clear about what you are looking for and what you want and don’t want to happen during your photo shoot. State your expectations clearly, and no doubt you will have a great experience!

Who Is Boudoir For?

Boudoir photography is for everyone.

You may be interested in discovering another side to your personality that you never knew existed. Or maybe you want to do something special, as a gift for your loved one (even if secretly, the gift is really for yourself – don’t worry, I won’t tell! …). Boudoir photography is the thing for you.

The thought of stripping down under the scrutiny of a camera may seem quite intimidating, but, within the first few seconds, you will get past the initial feeling of self-consciousness as soon as you realise that you are in safe hands. As regards myself, I can assure you that I will go the extra mile to ensure you are having the time of your life.

There is something extraordinarily empowering about stepping out of one’s comfort zone and owning one’s sensuality.

Preparing for Your Boudoir Session

More often than not, women will have questions about their Boudoir Session, so I decided to create a full list of Boudoir Photo Shoot Tips to help you get prepared!

Bring a variation of the following combinations:

  • One piece set (a bodysuit or teddy, a fitted slip dress or any spandex type of shapewear)
  • Twopiece set (bra & undies, high-waisted skirt & bra, garter belt set with bra & stockings)
  • Cover up wrap/shawl/cardigan/off shoulder long-shirt or blouse.
  • Something you LOVE tip: pastel colours and black, both photograph very well.
  • Treat yourself to a manicure and pedicure, however, do avoid facials or waxing for 1-2 days before your session as they can cause redness or blotchiness.

We usually start our shoots with some clothing. As you become more comfortable, we can work our way through your outfit choices. Feel free to bring lots of your favourite outfits or garments and we’ll help you pick out the best for your shoot.

Here are a few Boudoir Photo Shoot Tips And Tricks to consider:

  • DO cut off ALL the tags from your clothing options. Don’t forget the laundry instructions inside the garment.
  • DO invest in at least one cute bra & undies set that makes you feel super sexy and that fit your body type.
  • Plus size recommendations DO: bring a pair of more of highwaisted undies, an underbust waist cincher corset a garter belt, and/or any bodysuits . Pair these with an offtheshoulder cardigan, a button down long-shirt or a lace robe.
  • DON’T: wear anything that is too small or tight, as it may dig into your skin or create a dreaded “muffin top.”
  • DO consider bringing normal clothing if you’re extremely nervous or unsure about being too revealing. Suggestions: an offtheshoulder t-shirt, cardigan, or tanktops; a fitted button-up shirt, or a high slit skirt or dress. Many of these items can be paired with cute undergarments to make a very sexy (but less ) outfit.
  • DO remember that sometimes no outfit can be the best outfit. Some of my favourite images are photos taken when the client wasn’t wearing any piece of garment but was instead covered with a white sheet, towel, pillow, or a prop.
  • DO load up on accessories: Pearls, long necklaces, gaudy costume jewellery, hats, and others. Most importantlybring a pair of cute shoes!! High heels are a nice way to extend the length of your legs.

Why? (You May Ask)

What if I tell you that I know what you are thinking…

I will need to lose weight first.

I am not the photogenic type”

It’s selfish to spend so much time and money on myself”.

I’m sure that you can come up with a million excuses as to why you SHOULDN’T do a Boudoir Session, so I am going to give you just 10 reasons why you NEED to do one…RIGHT NOW!

GIFT

Imagine the look on his face when you surprise him with a little black leather album filled with sensual pictures of YOU – The One He Loves! If he already thinks you are beautiful when you’re having a bad day or when you’re wearing your yoga bottoms, imagine what he’ll think if you show him how smoking hot you are in classy lingerie and wearing professional makeup! It may be a side to you that he’s never seen!

Bridal

Having a beautiful and intimate Boudoir album made, has quickly become the gift of gifts to offer your partner on your wedding day. It’s something that you can both look at together or something that your partner can enjoy later when thinking about you and how much he or she loves you.

CELEBRATE A MILESTONE

Do you have an anniversary that´s just round the corner? Or is it a special birthday? Or maybe you’ve got yourself a well-deserved promotion? Why not take this period of your life and have it documented in a gratifying manner? Not only will you have some gorgeous pictures of yourself, but when you look at them, time and time again, you’ll remember exactly when you had them done, and why, thus celebrating how great this time in your life was!

Empowerment

One of the reasons so many women choose to do a Boudoir Shoot is because of the self-confidence they gain from it. All of the things you imagine yourself being are already there. You just need a little push to help you see them.

Tell Us Why You Don’t Think A Boudoir Shoot May Be For You.

I often get emails that say something down the lines of: “I’d really love to do a photo shoot with you, but I really need to lose some weight beforehand.” Or “I don’t really have anyone to offer the photos to.” Or “I’m not a model…” These are the most common remarks I hear from women who don’t think they have what it takes to do a Boudoir Shoot. Thing is that... by doing a Boudoir Shoot, you might just find out that it´s the best thing you’ve ever done for yourself in your whole life, and there’s absolutely nothing holding you back now.
So, What Are You Waiting For? Go
for It!

Maternity

These sessions are for women who wish to celebrate their experience both during and after pregnancy. Your body has not belonged to you for 9 months, and it has changed from just shy of a year ago. You should be VERY proud of yourself! You have made a new little person! Motherhood is such a beautiful experience and a Boudoir shoot is a fantastic way in which to celebrate this period of your life.

Fitness Goals

You’ve been working so hard to get in shape and there’s no better way to celebrate those hard-earned wins than by doing a Boudoir shoot and flaunting it. Girl, You’ve Earned It!

Have you recently become single again?

Ending a relationship is never easy, but it doesn’t have to be a time of mourning! This period marks a fresh new start and a chance to show the world all of the awesomeness you bring to the table. Doing a Boudoir Shoot is the perfect way to FLAUNT what you’ve GOT. Just a quick reminder of what they’re missing out on!

Own Your Sexiness

You’re allowed to be sexy. There is no book of rules that says otherwise. Your day job may force you to hold back. You might be worried about what your friends may think. Does it matter? The only opinion that’s important is YOURS! If you want to show off that lingerie that’s been sitting in your wardrobe, what better time than now! You determine the rules. Now own it!

JUST BECAUSE … YOU LOVE YOURSELF!

These days, we end-up spending so much more time focusing on our careers, our families, our Facebook status… that we don’t take the necessary time to actually focus on OURselves. Taking a day off like, for instance, getting pampered by my professional stylist, whilst doing an empowering photo shoot, and then, literally, having a book that you can look at over and over again that shows you how amazing you really are, might just be what you need. Treating OURselves once in a while isn’t selfish. It’s healthy.
